Established for the Advancement of Governance Science
The Johann Christian Hasse Foundation develops institutional frameworks, fellowship programs, and field research to address governance challenges in complex ecological and social systems approaching critical transitions.
About the Foundation Our ProgramsCore Mandate
Founded on the principle that effective governance must anticipate — not merely react to — systemic transitions, the Foundation operates at the intersection of legal architecture, ecological science, and institutional design.
Designing legal instruments and governance frameworks adapted to the pre-threshold condition — before irreversible transitions occur.
Operating the Amazon Living Lab to generate empirical data on threshold dynamics in tropical biomes and frontier ecosystems.
Training a new generation of governance professionals in anticipatory methods, threshold science, and institutional design.
Building coalitions across academic, governmental, and civil society institutions to operationalise the c-ECO framework at scale.
Amazon Living Lab
The Amazon Living Lab is the Foundation's primary field research platform, positioned at a biome-scale threshold zone in the Brazilian Amazon. It provides real-world data on governance failures, ecological tipping points, and institutional responses.
The Lab generates empirical inputs for the c-ECO Framework and the Threshold Function Protocol, operating as a bridge between theoretical governance models and on-the-ground realities.

Fellowship Program
The Foundation's Fellowship Program selects scholars and practitioners for intensive immersion in anticipatory governance, threshold dynamics, and institutional design. Fellows contribute to active research programs while developing expertise applicable across jurisdictions and sectors.
