Governance at the
Ecological Frontier

The Amazon Living Lab positions the Foundation's research within one of the world's most significant ecological threshold zones — the Brazilian Amazon, a biome under sustained pressure from deforestation, climate change, and governance failure.

The Lab is not a conventional research station. It is a living system for testing governance frameworks against the complex realities of frontier ecology: contested land rights, institutional fragmentation, indigenous governance, and rapid ecological transition.

Its outputs feed directly into the c-ECO Framework and the Threshold Function Protocol, providing the empirical grounding that distinguishes these frameworks from purely theoretical models.

What the Lab Studies

🌱

Ecological Threshold Monitoring

Tracking indicators of ecological threshold proximity — deforestation rates, biodiversity signals, hydrological shifts — to establish empirical baselines for governance activation thresholds.

Legal & Institutional Mapping

Mapping the legal and institutional landscape of the Amazon frontier: land tenure, environmental law, indigenous rights, and governance authority — identifying gaps and failure points.

🏛

Governance Instrument Testing

Field-testing components of the c-ECO Framework and TFP in live governance contexts, evaluating their operational effectiveness and institutional feasibility.

🤝

Indigenous Governance Integration

Documenting and integrating indigenous governance traditions into the anticipatory governance framework — recognising traditional ecological knowledge as a core input to threshold science.

What the Lab Produces

The Lab generates outputs across three domains, each feeding back into the Foundation's programme portfolio:

  • Empirical datasets on ecological threshold indicators
  • Governance diagnostic reports on frontier institutional systems
  • Field-validated governance instrument specifications
  • Case studies for the c-ECO Framework and TFP
  • Policy briefs for governmental and international audiences

All Lab outputs are developed in collaboration with the c-eco.io research platform, which manages technical documentation, modelling, and publication of results.
